Continuing Legal Education
As attorneys licensed to practice law in the State of New York, we are required to complete at least 24 CLE credits per two year cycle. Details are available at the NYS Office of Court Administration website.
Whereas most agencies provide some CLE training in areas they consider relevant, you probably need to obtain additional credits elsewhere. If cost were no object, there are tons of providers.
Reality dictates otherwise, so you should first check out the NYC Law Department’s listing of live and pre-recorded CLE courses (which are free). For more information, contact your agency’s CLE Coordinator or Corporation Counsel’s John Campbell at (212) 356-4081 or (212) 356-4085 or e-mail him at jcampbell@law.nyc.gov
Another great source is Practising Law Institute (“PLI”), which generously subsidizes many courses for us. Indeed, a number of city agencies now have a contract with PLI to provide courses at no cost to Agency Attorneys.
Pursuant to Article XIX, which was added to our contract during the last round of bargaining, we may now attend relevant CLE courses on City time, subject to prior agency approval.
